Artist-supplied story

21 October 2026

Is this the world’s greatest grain of sand?

One grain has its own gallery. Press the button to begin fifteen seconds of light.

Bondi artist Procrastinatedon would rather not explain how he chose the world’s greatest grain of sand. He probably checked them all first, just to be sure. The winner came from Mackenzies, the little cove between Bondi and Tamarama.

The grain is pale and roughly rounded, encased in epoxy and set in a gilded holder. A shipping container at Marks Park has become its gallery, complete with a frame, glass, velvet and lighting.

Visitors enter and press the button inside. Procrastinatedon says people lean in to find the grain; some have tried pressing the display itself, thinking it was the button.

Fifteen seconds later, the room goes dark. He has watched people laugh and press the button for each other.

Credits: ACA Build helped assemble the gallery on site in two days. Gideon Kanikevich, a friend of Nate’s from primary school, made the lighting and fifteen-second control box.

Nate Don is a Bondi-based designer and artist working as Procrastinatedon. His projects give ordinary things elaborate attention: White Line Therapy extended for roughly two kilometres at Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi, in 2024; The World’s Greatest Grain of Sand gives one grain its own gallery at the 2026 exhibition. He founded design practice HandToMouse, graduated in design from UNSW in 2018 and is a 2026 recipient of the Clitheroe Foundation Emerging Sculptor Mentor Program.
